Here are some tips for selecting the best headboard height for your customer’s bedroom.
Step one is to determine where the bed is going to be placed in the room. What’s the height of the ceiling? Are there windows to work around? Is it a large or small space?
Do you love to read, work on emails or binge watch your favorite shows while lounging in bed? A taller headboard will give you more space to lean back comfortably.
Consider the number of accent pillows you like on the bed. If you have an extensive collection, you’ll want a taller headboard so that it doesn’t disappear under a mound of throw pillows.
Headboards can also stand in for storage furniture when the bedroom is quite small. If you areis short on square footage, you'll want to make the most of all their space with a bookcase bed.
All too often, though, a mattress and box spring can put that headboard in an awkward position when the mattress is very deep. A thicker mattress and box spring can result in a headboard that now sits too low. These days a mattress can be 20 inches high. You don’t want the mattress to cover up the whole headboard. For some mattress manufacturers, the sky -- or rather, the ceiling -- has become the limit.

]]>Comfort is the most important factor that people seek when choosing a new mattress. You have many different types of mattresses to choose from, including: traditional spring mattresses, pillow tops, water beds, air beds, memory foam, latex foam and polyurethane foam.
Polyurethane foam is lightweight, making it one of the easiest mattresses to maneuver. It can be soft or firm, springy and has a quick response to pressure. There are three main types of poly foam: regular grade, high density, and high resiliency. Typically a poly foam mattress will use a combination these three in order to get the best support and comfort for the price.
For the health and longevity of your mattress, there are two maintenance tasks which you should routinely perform for your mattresses: flipping & rotating, and vacuuming.
You should be flipping and rotating your mattress to give the springs or foam a rest, which will enable your mattress to last longer. You should rotate your mattress every six months. That is, swing the head of your mattress to where your feet go. And then 3 months later, you should flip your mattress over. That is, you should turn your mattress over so that the top is now on the bottom, while still keeping the head end at the head end. To help clean and freshen your mattress, you should take the opportunity while flipping and rotating your mattress to vacuum it.
Dust mites and dander can build up in your mattress over time. To remove this you should use the upholstery attachments of your vacuum cleaner to thoroughly vacuum your mattress. You should vacuum your mattresses at least every three months.
DO’s
Do use a mattress cover. Mattress covers are removable and washable, and help protect your mattress from dust, bed bugs and other allergens. Water-resistant mattress pads are especially good if you have young children who are prone to bed-wetting accidents.
Do strip your bed when leaving on vacation. When you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, it creates a great opportunity to allow your beds to fully air out
Do replace broken foundations. Ensure that your mattress is properly supported.
DON’Ts
Don’t eat, drink or smoke on the bed. Eating or drinking in bed can lead to staining, and can leave odors and lead to breeding grounds for mold and other infestations. Smoking in bed can lead to deadly fires, and the smoke odor saturates into the mattress.
Don’t stand on or allow jumping on spring mattresses. Standing on these puts too much weight in a small area, which can permanently damage your mattress.
Foam mattresses can take this type of abuse!
]]>But having everything we thought we wanted isn’t making us happier. It’s bad for the planet. It’s cluttering up our homes. It’s making us feel ‘Stuffocated’ and stressed. He defines “stuffocation” as a feeling of stress caused by having so many things that you do not know how to use or store them all.
It used to be cutting back was a sign of poverty. It was a sacrifice, but now we are turning it around to something positive. Here are some easy ways to cut back in 2020:
Through decluttering, and focusing on the best things instead of all the things, you can create a life with more savings and less debt, more health and less stress, more space and less stuff, and more joy with fewer obligations.
]]>If you are looking to treat yourself to a new master bedroom you should think about how you want the room to feel and how you use it. Do you want it to feel warm and cozy, elegant, sensual or streamlined and simple? Is this space all about sound sleep, quiet music and reading time, or do you want it to serve as a private lounge space to catch up on their favorite shows?
Whatever the case, you will save time and money and ultimately be happier with the results if you consider the desired tone and function before you buy anything, paint anything or re-arrange a single piece.
The next step before you can start shopping is to consider the size and layout of the room. Measure the space and take the time to reflect on the size of the bed suitable for the room. Start with the bed and surrounding wall since this is usually the focal point of the room.
Do you need a new headboard? If you don’t have one, it’s time. Headboards create structure for the bed space and can be the quickest, easiest way to upgrade a master bedroom.
There are very few things that ruin the mood of a personal sanctuary faster than a massive pile of clothing sitting on your bedroom floor. If your master bedroom is small or has limited storage space, consider adding under bed storage. Under bed storage can contain a remarkable amount without taking up additional space in the room.
We're willing to bet you spend the most time in your bedroom out of any other space in your home. It can be hard to decorate a master bedroom that hits every note — a calm, organized retreat that helps you sleep. But with the right bed and storage you can master the master bedroom without spending a ton of time or money.
]]>The colour of the furniture that you select can completely transform the ambiance of a room; make it appear spacious or intimate, wide open or comfortably cozy.
The trend in recent years has been toward darker colours like Espresso. Dark furniture adds drama to a room and gives it a more formal look. It’s compelling, draws the eye and can serve as a wonderful focal point.
Lighter toned furniture – blonde wood and white, for example – is versatile. It goes well with practically any colour of wall or floor. It can also be used in contemporary, traditional, rustic, or country spaces, cottages, kids’ bedrooms, guest rooms, and sun rooms. On a practical note, lighter furniture is easier to maintain.
Grey continues to grow in popularity. Many of us love the way grey wood adds texture and dimension to a room. The right shade can soften the contrast between bold colors and surfaces, providing the perfect bridge between warms and cools, browns and blues. Grey wood makes a modern, versatile surface for any space. Grey stains are becoming a popular way to keep the warmth of wood while giving it a more modern feel.
]]>You used to buy books as gifts, but now your family prefers to use an e-reader; you used to bake, but now there are so many dietary restrictions; we stream movies and music online...in too many families gift giving has become an exchange of gift cards and cash.
Furniture is a great solution. We all need furniture in our homes, and we like furniture that looks good. But once we have bought what we need, it often takes a very long to replace items that become horribly worn, outdated and even uncomfortable. For this reason, a new bed or mattress can be the perfect gift, especially for a spouse or your children and grandchildren.
Bunk beds make great Christmas presents for the kids in your life. Sure, they may not fit under the tree or in a stocking, but bunk beds will certainly be one of the highlights of the season.
For kids, bunk beds are exciting. There are stairs or a ladder to climb, places to play or hide away, and maybe even a desk built into the bed itself.
Wrapping a sofa, bed or mattress is quite the challenge. Thankfully, you can reveal your gift in an easier way. One way around the secrecy aspect of keeping furniture gifts hidden until Christmas day is to give a photograph of the item, and then have it delivered after Christmas. Alternatively ask a friend or, preferably, a neighbour, if you can use their garage to “hide” it temporarily.
]]>However, it is not always the most inexpensive choice. The truth is that reupholstering furniture can often cost as much as replacing it, depending on the quality of the piece. Reupholstering furniture includes a complete tear down of the piece, removing all fabric, padding, and rejuvenating the support systems. This process ensures the end product not only looks better, but really is better. Once completed you have a brand new piece that is clean inside and out.
Similarly, Crate Designs replacement upholstered components are complete components, new foam, fabric and internal frames where necessary. With one important advantage: no down time. When you purchase Crate Designs replacement components you can continue to use your existing cushions until your new seats arrive. All of a sudden the decision of whether or not to re-use your existing furniture becomes easy. The frame is solid, sturdy and has lasted many years. Buying replacement components means you can continue to enjoy your furniture for years to come.
]]>Common bookcase problems include:
Problem #1: My bookshelf sags!
Heavy books got your bookshelf down? The best way to ensure a firm shelf is to go with a solid wood option. Shelves that use particle board (like so many do) will eventually sag over time – guaranteed. Solid wood is much sturdier and lasts longer!
Problem #2: I have too many books, not enough bookshelf space!
First of all, there is no such problem as too many books. You just need the right bookshelf to hold your collection! Size is the most important factor to consider when choosing a bookcase.
Consider both aesthetic and practical concerns when choosing height. Tall bookcases that fill up most of a wall typically look more expensive and formal; however, shorter ones offer the added functionality of a usable surface area on the top. This allows it to double as a media cabinet, buffet or workspace, for example.
Make sure you consider what you will be storing on your bookcase before making a purchase.
Problem #3: My books always get so dusty!
You’ve spent years amassing your collection, so why not preserve it in the best conditions? This is an easy problem to solve. Consider doors. The best thing about bookcases with doors is that it keeps dust from collecting on whatever is inside. Wood doors are also great for hiding clutter, but if you're using a bookcase as a display for dishes or interesting objects like figurines and souvenirs, you may want to consider glass doors.
Problem #4: You love the look of built-in bookcases but...
You’re scared of commitment. Maybe you rent, maybe you plan to move or maybe the cost of custom built-in bookcases is not in the budget. You can achieve a similar look by placing a few bookcases next to each other.]]>Dining room - instead of a fancy sideboard or buffet in the dining room, you can use a dresser for displaying and serving dinner or desserts when entertaining guests. Your seasonal tablecloths and napkins, serving utensils and extra cutlery are conveniently stored in the drawers below, freeing up valuable storage space in your kitchen.
Craft and sewing station - you can insert bins or baskets in the drawers for small, easy-to-lose supplies like rubber stamps, scissors, thread or extra bobbins. You can use the dresser top as extra workspace.
Entertainment or media stand - the easiest thing to do is to place your TV on top of a dresser. This could be a tall dresser in the bedroom or a double dresser in the living room. All good entertainment stands need plenty of storage. Put your remotes, extra cords, video games and everything else in the drawers.
Mudroom or entryway - a dresser can serve as a catchall for keys and purses or mittens and scarves as the weather gets cold. It can also hold mail and outgoing items on your to-do list.
Here are 8 more ways you can use a dresser to gain extra storage space in your home:
Of course, the type of bed you have greatly affects the type of mattress you need. If you have a bunk bed, you’ll want to make sure that you get a mattress that isn’t too thick. Your best bet is to aim for something 7” or 8” deep to maximize safety rail height for the top bunk. Remember, the thicker your mattress is, the higher up you sleep, which takes away valuable inches from your top bunk’s safety rail.
You also need to consider the bottom bunk headspace. Under-bed height is very important for the bottom bunk – so don’t go too plush there either! The thicker the mattress on the bottom bunk bed, the less headroom you will have. And, while you may not be too concerned about this, if you have little kids, remember that reading stories, tucking in and kissing good-night is usually a grown up’s job. You will certainly appreciate every inch when you are able to sit up straight even in the lower bunk bed.
Foam or spring? Great quality foam beats springs for bunks for many reasons. A spring mattress can be bouncy and a bouncy mattress encourages kids to... well... bounce! Which is not ideal when you have kids sleeping up high. It’s also a given that the bottom bunk will be stepped on. This can damage a spring mattress. So choose a durable foam mattress. Otherwise, you might have to replace it very quickly, which will end up wasting a ton of money.
The other advantage of foam is that it is lightweight compared to a spring mattress. Who will make the beds? Have you ever tried to change the sheets on that extra plush mattress in the master bedroom? There is quite a bit of maneuvering involved. Now imagine doing that suspended on a ladder, 4 feet up in the air – yes, not such a great idea! Get a lightweight mattress that you can easily lift to tuck in sheets or change bedding.
